INTERVIEWS: SCEVA

SCEVA is a band that is very difficult to describe. One of those bands that you just have to experience to understand. Heavy and melodic? Passive yet aggressive? Hardcore with emo with metal with punk with jazz? The sound is hard to explain, so we asked Sceva to answer some questions for us.

UPDATE: 07.07.07 Sceva has disbanded. I'm not sure about the rest of the members, but Aaron Miller went on to join A Utopian Skyline (who kicks ass, by the way). Be sure to check them out here.

MORBID SOUL MAGAZINE: Where did the band name come from? How would you describe the band to someone who has never heard SCEVA before?

SCEVA: The name Sceva comes from a priest whose thirteen children were destroyed with darkness. He was also supposed to have been the first priest to use the name Jesus Christ in exorcisms.  It kinda gives a sense of diluted purity, an oxymoron in and of itself.  To someone that has never heard us before I'd probably have to say "imagine a hardcore band that uses more singing than screaming with some metal in the mix and then some jazz parts and...."the list goes on, I personally feel that no matter how I try to describe us, it's not going to do the music justice.  That and I feel that we are still evolving as musicians and as a band.

MORBID SOUL: Who/What are your influences as a band, as a musician and as a person, past and present?

SCEVA: Oooooh this is a toughy.  There is waaaay too much.  Anything from Glassjaw to Finger eleven to Taproot to Poison the well to Incubus to Meshuggah.  There's a lot more.  Everybody is listening to and absorbing different stuff all the time.  Lately, I've been jamming a lot of Killswitch engage, Dredg, myDownfall/Lifer, oh yeah, and Sevendust, I just got their new one not too long ago.  I listen to lots of different stuff, but tend to gravitate towards the heavier stuff.  I think my father is one of my biggest inspirations, he was also involved in music, and still is today.  It's like something that's in my blood, one of the few things in my life where I know what I have to do.  Being on stage is the only time I truly feel alive, I think just being up on stage changes us as a band, makes us focus more.  The energy we share on stage is proof of that.  I really feel like if I didn't express myself creatively somehow, I'd fade away and implode, emotionally.  I guess there are just some things I have to share, and I'm happy for it to be realized in Sceva.

MORBID SOUL: Where do the lyrics usually come from ... personal experience, etc.?

SCEVA: Most of are lyrics are inspired by but not limited to relationships with women.  It's easy to feel the passion of an open wound, if you will, everybody has to deal with relationships plagued with problems at some point.  We have also written about friendships and the like.

MORBID SOUL: Sceva's done a lot of shows, can you tell me what has been your favorite shows/tour experiences so far? Also, what was it like doing shows with huge bands like Mudvayne, 40 Below Summer, Disturbed, Taproot and Chevelle? Were you nervous at all, etc.?

SCEVA: Some of the shows we played at the Why're were simply out of control, and there is just soooo much stuff that we look back on fondly, going to Edinborough to play with Gruvis Malt, Playing Augusta with Cephalic Carnage, Dealing with Paul manna at the Station in RI, The Tweeter center......Well, obviously playing the Tweeter center with Disturbed, Chevelle and Unloco was a big thrill for us.  There was not too much fear when we did that, more excitement and energy than anything else and everybody back here and those who came with us was more than supportive.  It reminded us that beyond a shadow of a doubt, this is the right path that we have chosen.

MORBID SOUL: What are your favorite local bands? What local/national bands would like to tour with in the future?

SCEVA: I can't necessarily pinpoint who my favorite is, but there are a few that I'm excited about.  There's a lot of good bands. I would look forward to touring with Hierosonic or the Underwater but then there are some bands that we don't actually know too well also, who we might enjoy touring with just as much.  It's really hard to say what Nationals you'd like tour with, unless you've met them, and can judge whether or not touring with them would be fun.  After meeting them at Tweeter, touring with Chevelle would probably be a blast.  It has to be more of a "would I get along with them" thing than it is a musical thing, you need to know that you are going to enjoy yourself as far as who you want to tour with.  Cuz you could tour with an awesome band with an arrogance problem and you'd be miserable the whole time.

MORBID SOUL: What advice can you give to bands that are starting out?

SCEVA: Don't give up, and promote the hell out of yourself.  Don't ever think you are good enough.  Talk to people.  If you have something to say that you feel could better the band, it doesn't matter who you are, spit it out.  This is a stressful business, and you have to hit it head on.  nothing can be half-assed

MORBID SOUL: Any thing else you want to say...

SCEVA: Expect to see a lot more about us very soon, we're working on new merchandise, new songs, and a whole mess of shows.  Our website is the place to be for all that. and thank you for listening to what I have to say, It's much appreciated.
