TIME OF NEED is about making heavy, insane music, with a bit of melody. Check out one of their live shows, or pick up "Seen Through a Shadow" or their latest, "A New Day" and you will hear some of heaviest shit, yet with an awesome melody. Hailing from Allentown, PA, this band is so powerful, both live and in recordings, that is makes you want to jump around. Drummer Angela Heaps took the time to answer some questions for me.
UPDATE: 07.07.07: Time of Need seems to have broken up. No word yet or additional music projects from the members.
MORBID SOUL MAGAZINE: Where did the band's name come from and how would you describe the bands sound to someone who has never heard Time of Need?
ANGELA HEAPS: Well the name came from the original members, Kevin Heaps, Angela Heaps, and Tom Berghold. We all sat around at the table going back and forth for names and I (Angela) came up with Time Of Need because we were in a time of need for a name, and it was time for us to get our music out there. Basically it means this.. Everyone is in a "Time Of Need" at one point in there life, and for us it was music we were in need of, so put it towards a break up, a death, a disease, a disaster...whatever.. then throw the CD or come to a show and just let go and let the music take you and forget about it all.. Describe us..Well I would say we are a mix of metal and hardcore with a lot of grooves and a lot of break downs. Very aggressive.
MORBID SOUL: What are the band's influences, personally and musically?
ANGELA: I will just list of some bands we really dig: Machine Head, Vision Of Disorder, Hatebreed, Sepultura, Soulfly, Chimaira, Meshugga, Skinlab, Killswitch Engage, Ill Nino, From Autumn to Ashes, Poison The Well, Danzig, Coal Chamber, Fear Factory, Sworn Enemy, Arch Enemy, Die Cast, the list can go on and on and on so I will stop there.
MORBID SOUL: Where did the album title "Seen Through a Shadow" come from?
ANGELA: Well this album was coming out when we were finally coming out of the "woodwork" so to speak. It is based on the lyrics and songs. Overall, Time Of Need likes when our fans get out of our songs and albums whatever they want, apply it to their lives and their situations and take off with it. Each song means something different for each member of the band, where we are in life, what we are experience, how we have overcome situations and how we are dealing.
MORBID SOUL: The new album is great, can you tell how, if at all, the recording/writing process was different for the new album and opposed to "Seen..."?
ANGELA: Thanks for the props man. Well this time around we went into the studio knowing just a little bit more about the recording process. We took a real long time in the studio mixing and mastering. And I mean a real long time, tweeking things just right. Our engineer Erik Kovortek helped tremendously, and working with him on this album was great. He knew what we wanted and we work really well with him. We really took time on this album with the drums because we kind of drowned them out on "Seen Through A Shadow" during the mastering process. Overall, we are very happy with the quality of "A New Day" and we will continue to record at Trax East in New Jersey with Erik Kovortek and we highly recommend people to him. We were very patient with this album as well and did not care how many times we needed to go back to the studio to make what we want happen.
MORBID SOUL: Where all has Time of Need toured and what has been your favorite show/venue/tour moment?

ANGELA: How It Ends, DXM, Sceva, Amalgamate, Imprint, Enamored, Scarred For Life, NineTail, Spinebelt-sorry for anyone I forgot.
MORBID SOUL: What bands would you like to tour with in the future?
ANGELA: Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, Chimaria, Skin Lab, Soulfly, Die Cast, Ill Nino, From Autumn To Ashes, Kittie,... basically all of our influences...
MORBID SOUL: What advice would you give to a new band just starting out?
ANGELA: Play hard, practice hard, have fun and kick some ass out there!!
