REVIEW: It's been 4 years since we last got a new album of original material from the beast known as Marilyn Manson. In those four years, it was speculated that Mr. Manson had forsaken music to pursue other projects, such as making a film and opening an art gallery. Also in those four years, the man himself got married to burlesque model Dita von Teese and had a painful divorce. It was alot to deal with presumably and as stated in interviews, there were times where he didn't even want to die, he simply just didn't want to do anything.
"Why don't you write a song about it?" Those are the infamous words of bassist-turned guitarist Tim Skold. To anyone else, that would be a given. But to Marilyn Manson, who's always written through another personna or as a character. Strangely, it'd never actually occured to him to simply lay it out in the open, but eventually, that's exactly what he did. This record was not the usual band effort, it was actually a collaboration solely between Skold and Manson.
This is a tragedy set to music, which to my ears, is very guitar oriented, very upfront, very classic rock . So much so, that for the first time on a Manson record, there are full-out guitar solos. It seems that Mr. Manson is trying to be much more of a singer as opposed to his usual vocal delivery. Lyrically this album is very emotional, very personal. It's written not about the government, not about religion, not about the media. No, this is a very rare and intimate look into the mind of Marilyn Manson.
With the exceptions of the songs "Are You The Rabbit?" and "You, Me and the Devil Make 3", which musically drift into a bit more typical Manson sound, this album has a very different sound and vocal delivery than anything he's every done. This a love it or hate it album, but if you can set aside all preconceived notions, I'd definitely suggest picking it up.
